Team New Zealand has asked the city of Auckland for a donation

9.5 million New Zealand dollars (around 4.8 million euros) are missing from the war chest of Cup defenders Team New Zealand. A financial injection of around 326,000 euros from the city is needed to bridge the gap.

The defender's precarious financial situation became known through an item on the agenda of the Auckland City Council. According to the item, a donation of 650,000 New Zealand dollars, which the team has requested, is to be discussed today.

It had not expected the agenda to be publicised and managing director Ross Blackman said only that it was in negotiations with the city but, as before, would not reveal anything about financial arrangements. The Cup final is still eight months away and the syndicate is comfortable with the funding it has achieved so far.
