"We will be competing off Bermuda with a hungry and strong team and want to achieve a top position there." This is how Olympic athlete, catamaran specialist and SVB Team Germany helmsman Paul Kohlhoff clearly formulated the ambitious goal of the young German team, which wants to fight for success and recognition on the America's Cup stage off Bermuda in June.
Action, drama, sailing skills: The 2nd edition of the Red Bull Youth America's Cup with young crews from all over the world promises exciting sport in the middle of the 35th America's Cup off Bermuda
The initiators of the project named their line-up today. SVB Team Germany will start the 2nd Red Bull Youth America's Cup with seven sailors, British coach Mark Bulkely, French shore manager Martin Piquet and many other supporters. The skipper is Finn dinghy helmsman Max Kohlhoff (Kieler Yacht-Club). In addition to Paul Kohlhoff, Johann Kohlhoff, the third brother, is also on board. Finn sailor Philip Kasüske (Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee), Magnus Simon (Mühlenberger Segel-Club), Moritz Burmester (Seglervereinigung Itzehoe) and Fredrik Eichhorst (Potsdamer Yacht-Club) are also on board.
As the only crew member, skipper Max Kohlhoff had already gained experience at the first edition of the Red Bull Youth America's Cup in 2013 in the team of Laser vice world champion Philipp Buhl and Rio bronze medallist Erik Heil and has now taken on the role of skipper accordingly. He thanked his team and their sponsors in advance: "Everyone has given their all. And even those who can't be there now have spurred us on and made us better!"
SVB Team Germany will fly to Bermuda on 26 May. Twelve international junior teams will take part in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup races, which will be held from 12 to 21 June, some of which are directly linked to the America's Cup teams and are also coached by them. Like other international junior teams, SVB Team Germany is on its own. They will be sailing on the fast AC45 class catamarans with foils. Participants in the regatta, which also serves as a recruitment showcase for the Cup teams, must be between 19 and 24 years old. The 1st Red Bull Youth America's Cup was won by helmsman Peter Burling, the man who is now steering the boat for the co-favoured Emirates Team New Zealand in the America's Cup. Burling is a multiple 49er and Moth world champion, won silver at the 2012 Olympic Games and gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He is the ultimate role model for many young sailors who aspire to a professional career in sailing.
