"In the history of the America's Cup, there has never been an edition that has been so spectator-friendly," says Stephen Barclay, Managing Director of the America's Cup Event Authority, and he may be right. After all, one of the aims in preparing the defence off San Francisco was to allow as many spectators as possible to take part. A new race format with courses directly in front of the piers is the result. "San Francisco Bay is a natural sailing arena. The regatta field is set in such a way that the topographical advantages of the bay are optimally utilised to create a real stadium atmosphere," says Barclay.
Tickets for this sailing arena are available from today. Various areas can be purchased:
America's Cup Village
The largest and most central spectator area on land. The grandstands in the heart of the Marina Green offer unobstructed views of the bay and the start line, including live commentary and access to the neighbouring shops and facilities. Within the Village, tickets can be purchased for the Deck, East Grandstand, West Grandstand and uncovered seats.
SS "Jeremiah O'Brien"
The SS "Jeremiah O'Brien", a historic ship from the Second World War, entices guests with a view from the "50-yard line". During the "Liberty Ship Experience", guests experience the America's Cup from the decks of this historic ship - a luxurious ambience, modern amenities and premium catering included.
Pier 39
The "Pier 39 Rooftop Lounge" is the most exclusive public spectator area at the America's Cup 2013 and has open-air seating as well as a lounge-style interior. Due to its elevated position, the view of the regattas is unique. Live commentary of all races will be broadcast on numerous screens. Gourmet food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages, are included in the ticket price.
On the water
Fans also have the option of buying a ticket for one of the spectator boats or chartering a boat to watch the races from the water. There are numerous boats to choose from, covering all price categories and capacities, according to the organisers.
Free seats
Access to the America's Cup Park (Piers 27/29) and the America's Cup Village (Marina Green) is free of charge. There is also a limited number of free, uncovered seats in the America's Cup Village, which are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis: these seats are also available every Wednesday in the Round Robin and the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
