The Chinese, who made their debut at the 32nd America's Cup - and finished last - want to get involved in the battle of the high-tech catamarans. This was announced today by the Cup organiser. The team is supported by the Chinese government and is to be sailed almost exclusively by Chinese sailors. Top international people have already been engaged as instructors, said team leader Mr Wang Chao Yong.
The construction of the AC 72 catamaran will be just as big a challenge as the sailing team. China has not yet gained much experience in this boat segment. However, according to Wang, it is "an opportunity to demonstrate China's skills in the leading high-tech areas of hydrodynamics and aerodynamics". In addition, the company has been working with the best designers in the world and the best universities in China for months.
China is the seventh challenger, with two teams to be added by the closing date, according to the organisers. Together with defender Oracle Racing, that would make ten teams.
The official challengers so far: Mascalzone Latino (Italy), Aleph (France), Artemis Racing (Sweden), Energy Team (France), Team Australia (Australia), Team China, Emirates Team New Zealand (New Zealand)
