From a sailing perspective, the end of May and the whole of June 2017 will be dominated by the America's Cup. The official programme has just been published, making it possible to plan your trip as far as possible. However, the dates are not absolutely certain as, as is usually the case in sailing, there may still be minor postponements due to the weather.
If you want to experience each of the six teams live, you have to be on the island from 26 May. The so-called round robins will be sailed until 3 June, with each team sailing twice against each other. For the first time, the defence team, Oracle Team USA, will also be competing.
The semi-final races will then begin on 4 June. The defender will no longer be there, nor will the worst team from the round robins, so only four boats will be sailing.
The two best challengers will then fight it out from 10 June for the right to sail against Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup.
This actual Cup begins on 17 June with two races, followed by races three and four the following day. This is followed by five rest days, which the teams can use for modifications. The last Cup showed what is sometimes possible within this seemingly short time. The Cup continues with two more races on 24 June and could end as early as 25 June if one of the two teams wins 7-0. Otherwise, sailing can continue until 27 June.
An extensive additional programme has been organised to ensure that visitors don't get bored during the breaks, some of which last several days. For example, junior teams will be sailing for the Youth America's Cup, there will be a regatta with J-Class yachts and a superyacht regatta.
