Whether round the world or in the canals of Venice, Loïck Peyron is currently hard to beat on multihulls. A few months ago, he set a new record for the fastest circumnavigation of the world with the giant trimaran "Banque Populaire V", and now he and his Energy Team have come up trumps in the America's Cup World Series of AC-45 catamarans in the lagoon city. In very light winds but with a packed grandstand, the Frenchman took victory in the fleet races and overall victory in the regatta.
"The light conditions worked in our favour," said the victorious skipper afterwards, who at 52 is also by far the oldest in the field. "I'm used to it and just try to stay cool. The pressure was in the red at the end, but that's what made it exciting. We are a small team, but hopefully that was just the beginning."
Team Oracle Racing Spithill came second, extending their lead in the overall ACWS standings to four points over the Kiwis from Team New Zealand, who took third place in Venice. Artemis won the match race final against Luna Rossa Piranha 2:0, putting the Swedes at the top of the overall match race standings and in third place in the ACWS rankings, just ahead of Venice winners Energy Team.
The season finale will take place from 27 June to 1 July in Newport, Rhode Island.
