Spectacle at its best: The New Zealanders capsize right in front of the spectators
At the start of the AC act off Newport, the New Zealanders capsized and needed almost an hour to right their AC 45 again

"On the windward mark rounding, one of the control lines on the wing jammed and it couldn't be hoisted," said helmsman Dean Barker, explaining the reason for the capsize. "The boat had too much pressure and we were already past the point where you can still luff or fall off."

The Kiwis were unable to right the cat fast enough and the wing filled with water. The boat was no longer lying on its side, but both bows were pointing vertically towards the sky. However, the rescue was successful and the cat is expected to be ready for use again today.

The US team with helmsman James Spithill dominated the opening day with a fleet race victory and a 2:1 in the match race against Korea.
