Detlef Amlong's "Froschkönig" (Kiel) continued her success story at Kiel Week by winning the Senate Prize at the 125th Kiel Week and - as the crowning glory - the Kaiser Cup as the best IMS ship across all regattas on the Kiel Week race courses.
After winning the Kiel Cup in the IMS IV class, the crew of the "Froschkönig" was almost out of reach of the overall victory and thus the Kaiser Cup, but the "Beluga Sailing Team" of Christian Plump (Bremen) in the IMS I class was close on their tail. The Senate Prize was the deciding factor. Plump, who had joined forces with sailing professional Markus Wieser from Lake Starnberg and Americas Cup sailor Matti Paschen, won the Senate Prize race in his IMS I class, but had to give way to the "Froschkönig" in the classification of all IMS boats. "Winning the Kaiser Cup would be a dream," Detlef Amlong had said before the Senate Prize. As the reigning IMS World Champion, this dream has now come true for Amlong. "We are happy to accept more trophies and are now looking forward to the German IMS Championship off Warnemünde," smiled Amlong, adding with a serious face: "Of course, it's a shame that we can't travel to the World Championship for financial reasons. But perhaps a sponsor will hear us out and make it possible for us to defend our title."
In the IMS II class, Wolfgang Uecker's "Flying Circus" (Neustadt) had the bow ahead of Jürgen Klinghardt (Bremen) on board his "Patent 3". "With all the wind shifts, the conditions were pretty difficult today. After the start, the wind dropped to just two to three knots and completely mixed up the field. Some of the courses before the wind turned into half-wind courses. The race committee saved a few things by moving the windward mark, but it was very difficult," reported Jürgen Klinghardt after the race.
The yachts "Inschallah VI" owned by Volker Andreae (Hamburg), the "Nautilus" owned by Dr Michael Kohlhoff (Kiel) and the "True Blue" owned by Torsten Keil (Kiel) won the ORC Club 1 - 3 classification.
