At yesterday's World Oceans Day 2022, organised by the UN, the most impressive images from the annual photo competition were honoured

The United Nations has taken up the cause of protecting the oceans. This photo competition was launched to showcase the beauty and importance of the oceans for humanity.

Led by Ellen Cuylaerts, a renowned underwater photographer, a jury of world-renowned nature photographers sifted through countless entries and honoured the strongest images in six different categories.

'OCEANIC LOTUS LEAF'
In every profession we find challenges, but also beauty. When fishermen go out on the water, they hope to return with boats full of fish and shrimps. I simply want to convey the beauty of the art of fishing with seine nets in my home province of Quang Ngai, Vietnam.

An array of lemon sharks and blacktip reef sharks cruise the shallow waters of Aldabra Atoll in the Republic of Seychelles. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, Aldabra is a shining example of the impact that forty years of protection can have on biodiversity.

BOATSMATRIX'
This picture shows fishermen's boats neatly lined up at anchor to avoid Super Typhoon No. 9. Storm No. 9 was the strongest super typhoon to hit Quang Ngai, my hometown, in 30 years and caused devastating damage: 325 houses were completely destroyed and more than 140,000 houses were blown away and destroyed.

The Bajau have spent their entire lives on their boats for many generations, from birth to death, from young to old. They are not citizens of the Philippines, Indonesia or Malaysia. The sea is their birthplace and their only home on earth.

Amitava Chandra, India, 2nd place
A couple are chatting with their family after lunch in their thatched dwelling. They belong to a fishing community that ventures out on the high seas to earn a living. They spend the nights at sea to catch fish and during the day they use the natural sunlight to dry the fish. Their lives are centred on and around the ocean and they are totally dependent on making a sustainable living in this difficult geographical area.

The idea of World Oceans Day was born 30 years ago at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Since 2009, 8 June has been officially celebrated by the United Nations as World Oceans Day. More and more companies, organisations and water sports enthusiasts are using this day as an opportunity to get involved in protecting the oceans.
