Handling a yacht correctly can be a lot of fun
In a six-part series starting with issue 6/2022, YACHT will address seamanship topics for beginners and advanced sailors

The term "seamanship" describes something very special in sailing. It combines all the skills, abilities and virtues that a skipper and, if possible, every crew member should have. It is not for nothing that the thick tome "Seemannschaft" (see book tip) is not only the standard work, but has also been one of the bestsellers on this topic for decades.

But you don't always need a whole book to acquire basic knowledge and a few special tips from the pros. YACHT does it too, and in the form of a trial subscription. You receive six issues at a special price and each one contains a major article on seamanship topics.

The topics:

  • Stress-free sailingIf a trip turns into a disaster, it is rarely due to coincidence, but rather to a lack of preparation and planning. Even a crew falling out at the end of a holiday can be such a disaster. Conversely, preparation, planning and, of course, good execution are the basic prerequisites for unforgettable, positive experiences. Part 1 deals with how these can be achieved.
  • Port manoeuvresPart 2 discusses a very specific case in detail. What to do on a leeward wall? So if the yacht is pushed alongside a pier or row of piles by an onshore wind and needs to be cast off. How do you get the boat away from the mooring? We'll show you in part 3.
  • Line handlingMooring lines are used when mooring and unmooring, and halyards and sheets are used at sea. If these are prepared and handled correctly, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. This part 4 deals with everything from shooting out different ropes to throwing around poles.
  • Set sail and salvageTo be able to sail, the cloths have to go up, to be able to dock properly, they have to go down. It sounds simple, but it actually is if you follow a few rules, which are not rocket science, but which you should know. Part 5 explains in detail what to look out for with both conventional systems and furling systems.
  • Parry gusts, avoid heelingWhen sailing, the yacht's inclined position, the heel, is often a source of anxiety for sailing beginners. Especially when it occurs suddenly, for example in a gust. Part 5 explains in detail how to recognise and parry these gusts of wind in good time, as well as the effects of too much heel and how to counteract it in good time, but also in a gust itself.
  • Anchoring - the romantic alternativeSailing is booming, and as a result, all the berths in the harbour are often occupied by lunchtime during the season. The alternative: anchoring! With a little care and practice, this is not a problem and also offers its own special charm: peace, nature, an uninterrupted view of the night sky and, whenever you want, a refreshing swim. In part 6, we show you what's important and what tips you can use to anchor safely.

The six-part series "Seamanship - from casting off to hoisting the sails" starts in issue 6/2022, on newsstands from 9 March.
