Well-rehearsed manoeuvres: not a matter of course for people with autism. But they succeed on board
A very special experience for skipper and crew: a camera team accompanied five young people with autism on a sailing trip in the Danish South Sea

Sailing and surfing instructor Rollo Beckmann sails with people with autism. What critics initially thought was impossible has now been a special holiday experience for his crew for 15 years.

Autism is a developmental disorder with different manifestations. People with autism communicate and act in their very own way, which is often incomprehensible to their fellow human beings. Sailing and life on board, on the other hand, require clear communication and social interaction. Will the cruise succeed despite this apparent contradiction?

A team of authors accompanies the crew with their special strengths and abilities. They show two of the twenty-somethings in their challenging everyday lives and the five-member crew on their cruise through the Danish South Seas.

Often outsiders in society, the sailing trip is the highlight of the year for the crew. The young people master the manoeuvres together in sometimes rough conditions and face the challenge of living in limited space on a Bavaria. They laugh, dance and argue together - and listen to each other.

The film "Leinen los - junge Menschen mit Autismus" from the ARD series "Echtes Leben" can be seen on 10 October at 17:30 on "Das Erste" and will also be broadcast on other ARD channels in the following days.
