On Christmas Eve, from 7 to 10 p.m. CET (6 to 9 p.m. UTC), NDR will once again broadcast messages to seafarers all over the world in the radio programme "Greetings on Board", as well as greetings from the ship's crews back home. Sailors who are currently on a long voyage can also look forward to a greeting message. To this end, the Trans Ocean association is included in the programme every year. Whether travelling in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Caribbean or the South Seas, the best wishes will go out from the TO, and many a distant sailor will also have their say.
The programme could not be recorded in front of an audience in Leer and Hamburg as usual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, some listeners will have the opportunity to greet their relatives and friends on the high seas from the NDR Info studio in Hamburg. The NDR Info reporters will also be reporting from Leer and the Altona Seamen's Mission.
The programme will be broadcast on Christmas Eve on NDR Info and NDR Info Spezial. NDR Info can be received via FM, DAB+ and DVB-S radio, NDR Info Spezial via DAB+ and DVB-S radio. You can find the live streams of the programme here: NDR Info and NDR Info Special. It is also possible to listen to the programme via the NDR radio app.
So that seafarers on the world's oceans can receive the traditional programme, NDR rents additional short-wave frequencies for transmission especially for Christmas Eve:
The "Greetings on board" programme enjoys cult status. It was first broadcast at Christmas 1953, making it one of the oldest radio programmes in the world still in existence.
