After last year's forced break, the 30th Hanse Sail in Rostock starts today. Smaller and more refined than in previous years, yet "Optimistically different" - the motto of the anniversary event - the first major windjammer festival of the year offers a colourful programme.
More than 100 traditional sailing boats are moored on the quay walls along the Warnow from Rostock city harbour to Warnemünde. They invite sightseers and sailors to watch and sail along. It is still possible to register for a trip on a brig, schooner or barque shortly before the start ( Sailing along to the Hanse Sail Rostock).
In order to make the major event possible despite corona, a number of measures had to be taken. For example, a maximum of 15,000 visitors - vaccinated, tested or recovered - are allowed to enter the main event area at the city harbour at the same time. The stage programme will not be announced in advance to avoid crowds of people.
The proud tall ship parades of previous years will also be dispensed with. Nevertheless, visitors can be optimistic that they will not only spot clouds in the blue sky, but also the odd gaff, mizzen and mainsail.
