The Max-Oertz Regatta was characterised by little wind in 2017 and was completely cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to coronavirus. This year, the event is picking up speed again
The classic yachts meet in Neustadt from 26 to 29 May to compete for the best places at the Max-Oertz Regatta "for the 19th+1st time"

After a two-year break due to the coronavirus, the regatta will be back on the Ascension weekend off Neustadt. Around 60 wooden boats, from the Hansa dinghy to the 12 metre racing yacht, will be sailing on Friday and Saturday for the coveted prizes at the first regatta of the Friends of Classic Yachts.

The Programme begins the day before Ascension Day. On the way to Neustadt, the Schaich boatyard invites the arriving boats to a small harbour party in their marina in Fehmarnsund on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, there is a feeder race from Fehmarn and Travemünde to the Neustadt approach buoy. In the evening, the ships, some of which are 100 years old, moor in front of the beautiful harbour backdrop. There will be live music, beer and sausages around the campfire to welcome them.

The organisers have come up with something new this year so that the beauties can be admired from more than just the shore: an "Open Ship". Selected yachts display the yellow flag and indicate to interested tourists that this ship can be viewed by prior arrangement. The owners will be happy to answer any questions about their boats.

The first up-and-down regattas will take place on Friday before the starting signal for the 20th Max Oertz Regatta in honour of the greatest German yacht designer born in Neustadt is given on Saturday. As the anniversary will not be celebrated until next year due to the planning uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, the organisers have named this year's regatta "19th+1st".

On both days, the fishermen grill delicious herrings for the sailors and all the spectators strolling around the regatta tent. Music and delicious drinks round off this traditional culinary event.
