Things did not go according to plan for the first division favourites at the penultimate Bundesliga regatta of the season. The league leaders from NRV stumbled, the second-placed SMCÜ sailors even came last. The podium on the Wannsee remained firmly in Berlin hands

Treacherous Wannsee winds shook up the Bundesliga rankings at the fifth and penultimate regatta of the season. The hosts fared best on the Wannsee. Jan Jasper Wagner, Elias Rothe, Max Salzwedel and Carl Naumann won for the Seglerhaus am Wannsee club ahead of the Seglervereinigung 1903 with Erik Witzmann, Wolfram Kramer, Daniel Master and Andreas Wiener. Third place went to the hosts from the Berlin Yacht Club with Philip Bruins, Valentin Gebhardt, Charlotte Grasender and Max Nickel.

The favourites struggled in the treacherous Wannsee wind conditions

And where were the top favourites? Leon Passlack, Florian Haufe, Johann Kohlhoff and Ferdinand Pfund had to be satisfied with ninth place in the team of table leaders from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein on this autumn weekend. Nevertheless, the team from Hamburg were able to extend their lead over second-placed Segel- und Motorboot Club Überlingen (SMCÜ). This was due to the fact that the Lake Constance crew completely botched their Berlin outing and were unable to finish higher than 18th and last on the Wannsee.

Things did not go much better for the team from Mühlenberger Segel-Club, who started the tenth anniversary season so convincingly with second and third place. After 16th place in Berlin, the team from the Hamburg Elbe slipped to eighth place in the table.

Ahead of the first division final in Friedrichshafen (13 to 15 October), the record champions from NRV now have an eleven-point lead over SMCÜ with just 23 points on their first division account. This means that Hamburg, who have dominated this season, can theoretically still be knocked off course for their sixth club championship since 2013, but they would also have to make a significant slip-up at the Lake Constance final. NRV won the Bundesliga premiere season in 2013 and also lifted the championship trophy in 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2020.

Well-deserved reward for spirited hosts

Seniority, experience and local knowledge were in demand this weekend in Berlin on board the J/70 yachts of the Bundesliga teams. The best answers were provided by the capital's sailors themselves. The league match was also a lot of fun for the sailors on land. The hosts shone on their modern harbour facilities at Wannenbad 55 between the island of Schwanenwerder and the lido with good organisation and a lot of league fun. The Berlin Yacht Club is a founding member of the league and sailed to a well-deserved third place on the podium in its tenth season.
