Ten years ago, Laura Dekker became the youngest person to sail around the world single-handed. This was preceded by long battles with courts and authorities who wanted to prohibit her from doing so. In the end, Dekker prevailed and did her thing.
Her thing, she's doing it again. For the second time, she has taken young people on board with her to sail a round the Atlantic with her: from Portugal to the Caribbean and back. Why is she doing this? She wants to get the kids out of their comfort zone and show them that there are more important things in life than mobile phone chats and Netflix series.
And so this time it's not just calm and storms, but also the behaviour and moods of adolescent teenagers that present Dekker with sometimes unexpected challenges. Shortly before her departure, she talked to us about how she meets them and what she and the kids will learn on this trip.
The big interview with Laura Dekker can now be read in the new YACHT (issue 3/2022, available now in magazine shops and as a digital edition in the YACHT app and can be ordered directly here ).
