For two days in Adelaide, Philipp Buhl, who started the Ilca 7 World Championship so outstandingly, was under massive pressure. The 38-point penalty imposed on him on Sunday as a result of a penalty ring weighed heavily on Buhl in the final World Championship sprint. Germany's best laser sailor knew that he could not afford another poor result in the battle for a top result at the World Championships and maximum points for his Olympic elimination account.
The 2020 world champion started races seven and eight on Monday with a corresponding level of concentration and "perhaps a bit cautious". He came home cleanly in ninth and sixth place. He was then in seventh place. On this basis, the 34-year-old started the last two races of the gold fleet before the final on Tuesday.
With sixth place and an outstanding win on the day, the Ilca-7 helmsman, who competes for the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein and his home sailing club Alpsee-Immenstadt, catapulted himself to fourth place in the World Championship classification of the 153(!) starters from 52 nations on Tuesday.
"He's been under a lot of pressure over the last two days, especially in terms of avoiding catching another string. I'm very happy with Philipp's performance today. He did really well," said DSV coach Alex Schlonski, paying tribute to his top athlete in Adelaide on Tuesday after races 9 and 10.
Today was a day like I haven't had in laser sailing for over a decade" (Philipp Buhl)
Alex Schlonski explained: "Philipp has had to ride with a handicap compared to the top guys since Sunday. He did a very good job today. He performed very well and drove two strong races. It's an honour for him that he did so well." Despite his finishing qualities, Philipp Buhl will no longer be able to get involved in the battle for the medals on Wednesday, as his fourth place with 51 net points separates him from third-placed Micky Beckett (31 points).
Nevertheless, Buhl was able to recharge his batteries on Tuesday. The four-time World Championship medallist said at his 15th World Championship: "Today was a day like I haven't had in laser sailing for over a decade. Sun, 20 to 28 knots and waves one and a half to three metres high in pleasant temperatures. And in these conditions, two long races lasting just under 60 minutes!"
It was hard, exhausting and awesome" (Philipp Buhl)
Buhl enjoyed the champagne conditions wholeheartedly and said: "In the course of the medialisation of World Sailing, we usually only go to strange areas, close to the shore, and sail medal races on mornings when there is no wind. Today was laser sailing at its best for the first time in a long time. It was tough, exhausting and awesome."
The final day has given Philipp Buhl maximum motivation for the final. Even if the top three with Olympic champion and defending champion Matt Wearn (22 points), the Norwegian Hermann Tomasgaar (30 points) and Micky Beckett will decide the medals among themselves. Buhl can secure fourth place at the World Championships with a successful medal race and finish no lower than sixth. He has thus confidently confirmed his status in the Olympic squad and created a good starting point for the fight for an Olympic ticket.
Buhl's result in the medal race and Nik Willim's last Goldfleet result on Wednesday will decide the outcome of the elimination duel between Buhl and his team-mate and Olympic rival Nik Willim from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein. Willim was also able to improve on the final day, moving up from 21st to 14th place with 4th and 17th place.
Alex Schlonski said: "Nik averaged a tenth place today. I'm also very happy with him. That's a good performance for him in the Goldfleet in the conditions - a step forwards for Nik personally. Even if it wasn't quite enough to get into the medal race here and jeopardise Philipp."
All those involved will wait until after the final races to calculate the detailed significance of the World Championship results. However, it is already clear that Buhl will extend his four-point lead in the three-part elimination series in the battle for an Olympic ticket after two of three regattas. The final decision on the Ilca 7 national starting place at the Olympic Games in Marseille, which has already been secured, will be made at the Mallorca classic Trofeo Princesa Sofía in April.
