That was close. Laser World Champion Philipp Buhl made it really exciting once again on the last day before the Medal Races. After the first race of the day, in which he finished 32nd, it was not clear whether he would even reach the Laser Men's Medal Races. He initially slipped to eleventh place and would have been eliminated.
But Buhl kept a cool head. The 31-year-old was the first to round the windward mark in the second race of the day and dominated the field right up to the finish. With this victory, he is now back in fifth place. Silver or bronze are still possible, at least mathematically. However, the candidate for the gold medal has already been decided. It goes to the Australian Matt Wearn.
The 49erFX women Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke also put in a strong race. They sailed to third place in the ninth race and are now in fifth place in the overall standings. Three races are still to be sailed in the skiff class. The field is led by Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz from the Netherlands.
The 49er men Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel lost one place. With a 7th and a 12th in the two races of the day, they are now in fifth place out of a total of 19 after nine races sailed. The field is still led by the Brits Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell.
It was another disappointing day for the German women in the 470 Luise Wanser and Anastasiya Winkel. After their disqualification on Wednesday, they finished 16th and 8th respectively and dropped back to 14th place in the overall standings.
The Kiel catamaran sailors Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer had to take a deep breath on the rest day of the Nacra 17 Mixed. After two strong days of racing and a total of six races, the pair are currently in third place - closely followed by Argentinians Santiago Raul Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli.
Even more sailing Olympics can be seen on television. The public broadcasters will broadcast the races alternately. ZDF will start today, 30 July, followed by ARD on 31 July. Live coverage is available for a fee on the internet via Joyn, where the races can also be viewed afterwards. Unfortunately, most of the races on ARD and ZDF as well as on Joyn are without commentary.
