Great start for the two catamaran sailors: Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer are in second place overall after the first day of racing in the Nacra 17 Mixed. The 470 women Luise Wanser and Anastasiya Winkel shone in their Olympic premiere with fourth place. The 49er men, on the other hand, slipped back to eighth place.
It was a great start for the two catamaran sailors from Kiel. In three races, helmsman Paul Kohlhoff and foresailor Alica Stuhlemmer crossed the finish line in fifth, seventh and even first in the second race. This puts them in second place on the first day of the Nacra regatta.
The Argentinian Olympic champions Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza in particular made life difficult for the pair in the second race. But the Germans held their nerve and won the race.
"That was a good start. We are pushing hard. But we're still a long way from earning the blue bib we'll be allowed to start in on Thursday," said Kohlhoff after the race. First in the overall Nacra standings is currently the favourite team from Italy: Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti.
Meanwhile, the 470 sailors Luise Wanser and Anastasiya Winkel from Hamburg and Kiel also rang in their Olympic premiere successfully in fourth place overall. With ninth and fifth place, the 23-year-old helmswoman and her 26-year-old foresailor took fourth place at the start.
In the 49ers, the German team of Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel dropped back to 8th place. On the second day of the class regatta, they sailed to 13th, 5th and 14th place. An upset stomach affected the team, said foreskipper Plößel. After four races, the field is now led by the Brits Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithill.
The German 49erFX women's team showed consistent performances on Wednesday. Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke initially managed a third place. As a result, they briefly climbed to sixth place in the overall standings. However, after finishing 14th and 12th in the following races, they lost one place and are now in seventh position.
