Secure hold. With the right equipment and technique, the anchoring manoeuvre almost always works
Spending the night at anchor is an unrivalled experience - but only if the skipper and crew trust the gear. What to consider when choosing the right anchorage, manoeuvre and equipment to ensure a relaxed end to the trip

Those who break away from the fleet of harbour commuters can discover many new things. It is not uncommon for the herd instinct to lead the way: a yacht anchored off the coast seems to attract other sailors. The decision is often made spontaneously: "Look, that's a nice anchorage. We could do that too."

Anchoring is more than just a free overnight stay outside of crowded marinas. The manoeuvre also provides alternatives when planning a trip, as there is not always a port nearby when the crew or yacht need a breather. As with most nautical skills, practice is necessary to ensure that spending the night on your own iron remains a positive experience.

The film from our last test shows which anchor works well and which is rather unsuitable

In the current issue of YACHT 11/2022, we explain what you should bear in mind when choosing an anchorage, preparing for the manoeuvre and during the manoeuvre itself, and what is important when it comes to anchoring gear
