"The history of GDR sailing"
Documentary about GDR sailing presented in Warnemünde

In 40 years, GDR sailors won seven Olympic, 17 World Championship and 53 European Championship medals - now a book by an insider provides a look behind the scenes of this successful system. Author André Keil , 38, born in Mecklenburg, is a journalist and sailor and was one of the top sailors in the 470 in the GDR.

Keil presented his first book today at the Hotel "Neptun" in Rostock-Warnemünde: "Die Geschichte des DDR-Segelsports". It is also the first book about sailing in the east of the republic. Keil has compiled exciting facts and figures from this era and enriched them with interviews and portraits of protagonists from the time.

Big names appear in it. Jürgen Vogler, for example, who is regarded as the founder of the successful GDR Finn tradition. Or Jürgen Mier, Christian Schröder, Bernd Dehmel and - last but not least - Jochen Schümann. Keil describes the careers of these great athletes in detail. The legendary reporter Heinz-Florian Oertel has also written a guest contribution for the book. on. A detailed statistics section includes all GDR Olympic participants and medallists, as well as all World Championship and European Championship medallists and the GDR champions in the national, Olympic and international boat classes.

"Die Geschichte des DDR-Segelsports" is published by Delius Klasing Verlag and costs 20.50 euros.
