Shocking reports, such as the one about the accident on the "Special One", in which the deputy skipper lost his life because no one was able to get him back on board (see YACHT 21/12), have made some readers think: How can the partner get me back on board alone in wet oilskins?
Herbert Wengatz has found out: All you need is a few metres of line, a two- and three-disc block, two large snap shackles and a plastic box for storage. The ingredients cost just under 100 euros.
In an emergency at sea, the recovery buoy is removed from the prepared box. The distance between the blocks is already largely optimised so that only the end with the three-disc block needs to be pegged to the boom nock. Place the long end on a cleat and secure the boom with a bull pole and sheet. Then pick the end with the two-disc block into the recovery loop of the lifejacket of the person overboard.
The tackle reduces the force required to around 25 kilos. If necessary, the line can also be guided onto a winch.
