When we moor to a mooring buoy on windless days, the boat and the buoy sometimes drift together. Then the pole on the buoy (if present) can hit the hull. This results in unsightly scratches and causes a real scare at night - both things that we tried to avoid at all costs. However, neither very long nor very short mooring lines help to eliminate the problem.
However, a fender, preferably an old one, provides a remedy. We cut off the bottom end so that the rubber sausage can be put over the top of the buoy as a protective cover. At the top, we cut a hole through which the mooring line is pulled endlessly. To cast off, we make it easy for ourselves: we pull the fender off the buoy with a safety line. However, we only do this after casting off to prevent scratches during the manoeuvre.
