To avoid having to measure the correct length of our upper and lower shrouds with a folding rule, tape measure or calliper every time I set the mast, I made myself a metal template that I simply stick inside the shroud tensioners to check the measurements. I took the measurements last year after the mast was 100 per cent standing. The template can also be made from aluminium, plastic or even hardwood. Four lengths are stored on the template: one each for the upper shrouds and the other two values for the front lower shrouds. If these measurements are correct, our top-rigged mast is straight and the bend is correct. We then tighten the aft lower shrouds by feel, as well as the backstay.
