Because the large racing yachts were able to prove their speed potential above all on long-distance races, a regatta was started for them on the first Kiel Week weekend in 1893, which led from Kiel to Eckernförde, the fishing village from which most of the yacht sailors came.

These "Eel Regatta" has become an integral part of the "biggest sailing event in the world". After a break, it has been back as the opening event since 2017 and the field of participants for the upcoming anniversary will be somewhat reminiscent of days gone by. The organisers are expecting 50 to 100 classics at the start.
