The representatives of Sailing Team Germany continued to sail strongly in strong winds at their home World Cup in Kiel: six top-three places and 25 in the top ten in the Olympic classes and the 2.4 metres. It is an impressive result, even if not all classes are as ultra-strong as ten days ago at the Skandia Sail for Gold in the Olympic area of Weymouth.
Breaking a mast on the approach to the start, only to sail towards the wrong buoy after repairs are made, is actually sailing hara-kiri. However, Germany's favourite windsurfer Moana Delle overcame both mishaps, took victory on the day and is currently in third place in the RS:X women's race. "It was a lot of stress today, but also a lot of fun," said the local heroine afterwards. Heiko Kröger certainly enjoyed it too, taking two stage wins in the 2.4mR and extending his overall lead over Megan Pascoe (GBR). Toni Wilhelm is also on course for a podium finish in the RS:X men's race and is currently the sausage in the sandwich at the top, holding second place between the two strong Poles Miarczynski and Michal.
The internal STG duel for the Olympic ticket in the lasers is as exciting as expected. Simon Grotelüschen, who led yesterday, dropped back to third place behind Josh Junior (NZL) and team-mate Philipp Buhl. However, Buhl, who has already won two races, and Grotelüschen are currently separated by just a single point. "Sailing is simply fun in this wind," Buhl posted on Facebook. Lisa Fasselt was also strong in the Laser Radial, finishing equal third on points with Croatia's Mihelic and Australia's Weir. Franziska Goltz, who was able to collect qualification points in Weymouth in 10th place, follows in 6th place.
Five German teams are still in the top ten in the women's 470. The best are currently Tina Lutz/Susann Beuke in second place. The 470 men's team has also remained strong, with Morten Bogacki/Jens Steinborn currently leading the STG contingent in fifth place overall.
In the 49er, there were three German race wins in the respective groups. Lennart Biesenick-Pudenz/Julian Massmann are currently the best from STG in 4th place. The Germans are still without a race win in the Star, but Robert Stanjek/Frithjof Kleen are doing well in 5th place, followed by three teams from their own ranks. Matthias Miller is still in 6th place in the Finn. Silke Hahlbrock has survived the first round robin in the women's match race and has won all three of her races so far in round 2, just like the American Tunnicliffe and the Russian Skudina.
The wind will continue to blow from the west during the course of today and weaken towards Tuesday.
