"Our shipyard team had great fun working on this project and realising some new things for us," Hauke and Malte Steckmest told YACHT online. Because the Scalar yachtsThe boats that their employees usually work on are traditionally made of wood - apart from their GRP hulls. However, the production of the Team8 boat required the use of epoxy in a vacuum infusion process and the construction of the plastic deck also deviated from the usual.
The association Student Sailing Schleswig-Holstein and its chairman Klaus Karpen took care of financing the project from sponsors, sports funding and lottery funds. The aim of the association is to provide schools in as many locations in Schleswig-Holstein as possible with a Team8 boat. Since the association was founded 20 years ago, centres have already been set up in Flensburg, Eckernförde, Rendsburg, Kiel, Timmendorfer Strand, Wedel, Neustadt and Schleswig.
The new building, now christened "Lütt Gorch Fock", was also put out to tender after the keel was laid in March and schools were able to apply for the boat with a base concept. In the end, the Gorch Fock School in Kappeln was awarded the contract. Headmistress Wiebke Christiansen-Hansen wants to use the open keelboat, which has been specially designed for training, together with the community school, the Klaus Harms School and the Arniss Sailing Club utilise.
After the ceremonial handover of the boat during the christening, the shipyard team from Henningsen & Steckmest will now transfer the "Lütt Gorch Fock" to Kiel, where it will take part in the Pupils' Cup next Wednesday.
