There is explosive material behind the notices to mariners 161/22 and 181/22, and not just in the literal sense, because the sober notices from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency mean significant restrictions for sailors on the North and Baltic Seas. Unlike in previous years, training and shooting operations will continue this summer without a break. A navy spokesperson commented on the situation to the "Kieler Nachrichten" newspaper: "The German navy is using these areas for firing exercises together with the industry." The navy does not provide any more precise details about when and where the units are firing. It merely states: "Shooting is taking place day and night, as long as the firing range is clear."
The decision as to whether a field of fire is free must be made by those responsible for the ship that wants to shoot. As was the case with the Exercises scheduled for spring the target disc tugs are there as a safety feature. They warn other ships with white flares and illuminate the targets with spotlights as soon as a ship enters the danger zone.
Artillery fire from land is also to be expected in the firing areas in Hohwacht Bay. From mid-July, the Gepard tanks destined for the Ukraine are to be shot at with new ammunition. The tests are scheduled daily from 9 am to 5 pm. As usual, the firing range marked by yellow buoys will be secured by guard boats.
The training areas for submarines are also likely to be unusually busy. Two new submarines for Singapore are currently being tested there. The submarines are supported by an escort ship, which takes the practice torpedoes that emerge after firing back on board. The areas in which submarines are travelling are not restricted areas and may be passed by all ships. However, you should keep your distance from the escort boats.
