Fantastic weather, exciting sailing, a prominent stage: often 20 knots of wind and 36 teams made the weekend in Kiel a successful league summit that was enjoyed by the fans on land. The new leader is the Mühlenberger Segel-Club (MSC) ahead of the Segel- und Motorbootclub Überlingen (SMCÜ) and the Württembergischer Yacht-Club (WYC). In the second national sailing league, the Klub am Rupenhorn (KAR) came top of the table.
Kiel.Sailing.City provided the ideal stadium for the races. Tight starts, exciting racing and tight rounding of the buoys demonstrated the high standard that the league participants have long since achieved. The races of the second act of the Bundesliga were held here over three days in perfect conditions. Thousands of spectators lined the shore of Kiel's inner fjord at Camp 24/7. The regatta festival was also made possible by funding from the Sportland SH initiative of the Ministry of the Interior, Municipal Affairs, Housing and Sport of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
"On Friday, the first day of sailing, we had ideal conditions of up to 20 knots," says Anke Lukosch from the organisation team of the German Sailing League. "Compared to the first event in Hamburg in May, it was clear that all the teams were really well prepared and had also taken care when putting together the crews to do justice to the challenging conditions on the fjord."
"Everything went really well for us in Kiel and we are super happy to have done much better than last year," says Till Krüger from Mühlenberger Segel-Club (MSC). "Of course, leading the standings is the crowning glory of the weekend," said a delighted Krüger, who also won the eSailing club title for the MSC in 2020.
The team of record winners from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV), led by former Olympian Tobias Schadewaldt, took the first league victory off Kiel. "We are totally happy that we were able to sail so strongly over the three days in the changeable conditions. I think the season is now open again. We are definitely looking forward to Travemünde and Warnemünde and to making the fight for the title exciting," said helmsman Schadewaldt. His crew beat the Schlei-Segel-Club and the Mühlenberger Segel-Club to second and third place in Kiel. Click here for the first league table after two rounds (please click!).
At the weekend, the Klub am Rupenhorn won the test of strength between the teams in the 2nd Bundesliga ahead of the Konstanzer Yacht-Club and the Kieler Yacht-Club. This allowed the team from Constance to extend their lead. After two league weekends, Regatta-Segler Neuruppin is in second place ahead of Klub am Rupenhorn. The inclusive Bat Sailing Team of FC St. Pauli, which competes in the second league with visually impaired sailors and has already taken part in the J/70 class regattas as part of Kieler Woche, attracted particular attention at the weekend. The next match day of the Sailing Bundesliga 2022 will take place in Travemünde in a fortnight' time from 29 to 31 July as part of Travemünde Week. The final of the Sailing Champions League 2022 will also be held here.
"The dense sequence of high-calibre events in the J/70 class in just a few weeks has once again raised the high standard of the Sailing Bundesliga," says Oliver Schwall, initiator of the Sailing Bundesliga. "There is no more challenging format for former Olympians and world-class sailors in the various dinghy and keelboat classes."
