The easternmost island in Greece, or more precisely the southern Dodecanese, is so far off the beaten track that it is simply missing from many travel guides. But it is also anything but easy to reach. If you want to get there from Rhodes, the nearest Greek island, you have 65 nautical miles ahead of you. Crews travelling there from Turkey would have an easier time. Kastellorizo is only three miles from the coast near Kas. But simply sailing from Turkey to Greece and back again can end badly. The two countries are anything but friendly.
And so the coast guards control the border waters around the clock. Those who do not clear in and out risk penalties, especially on the Turkish side. Kastellorizo is also not an official port of entry. However, EU owners travelling from Turkey can check in via an agent for a fee. When returning to Turkey, clearing in is expensive and time-consuming and therefore not really an option for charter crews.
If you somehow have the chance, you should definitely visit Kastellorizo. The beautiful harbour bay alone, lined with brightly coloured houses right on the water, is an idyllic destination. As you turn around the last cape, the harbour opens up like a small paradise. Surrounded by steep cliffs, pastel-coloured buildings line the bay. Only in summer do a few holidaymakers get lost here on the ferry from Rhodes or yachties. The latter land in the apex of the harbour in front of the tavernas and practically place the gangway between the restaurant tables. A visit to the taverna is of course obligatory. As is a short visit to the harbour office.
You should also take a walk around the village. If you're lucky, you might see two large loggerhead turtles. They live here because the restaurant owners have been feeding the animals - illegally - for years. If you don't spot them, just ask the landlords, they know the favourite spots of the armoured giants.
Otherwise, Kastellorizo is a sleepy nest in the most beautiful sense of the word. Incidentally, from the Greek outpost you at least have a great view of the Turkish mountains towering opposite.
