In this webinar, an introductory course to YACHT astronavigation, the RYA Yachtmaster & Ocean Instructor and Examiner will introduce the basics of astronavigation and walk you through the simplest calculation – the meridian latitude – step by step. He will then use diagrams during the evening webinar to show how the same principle can be used to determine a position using latitude and longitude, so that you can familiarise yourself with the basic principles. You can build on this knowledge in more advanced courses.

If required, a template for calculating the meridian width can be purchased separately:

So, if you’re keen to delve deeper into the subject of astronavigation, you can do so from 5 to 7 December at the Astro-Advent in Bremen take a crash course over a weekend or in Malta the the full six-day RYA Yachtmaster Ocean course complete.

This webinar is ideal for gaining an initial insight into how, by taking a few angle measurements using a sextant, you can determine a position on our blue planet with an accuracy of 2 to 3 miles. By the end of the webinar, participants will at least be able to calculate their latitude to within a few miles – and that was sufficient well into the 18th century for safe navigation across the oceans.

Once you’ve learnt how to determine your exact location using astronavigation, you can work out a bearing in just about ten minutes, without any formulas or a calculator. Two bearings then give you a position! Voilà!

NOTE If you are unable to attend the webinar on the scheduled date, you can also Participants who were “unable to attend” can watch the recording of the webinar (though limited to four weeks) watch it again.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you!
