Seamanship brings together the key principles of safe boat handling – from manoeuvres and sailing in heavy weather to what to do in the event of accidents and emergencies. For the purposes of this article, this standard reference work expands on the practical ‘man overboard’ perspective by placing it in a broader context: crew preparation, safe procedures and the interplay between seamanship, navigation, meteorology and first aid on board.

Medicine at Sea focuses on the medical consequences of an emergency, such as following the rescue of a crew member from the water. The guide explains first-aid procedures, resuscitation and the essential contents of the on-board first-aid kit in an accessible way, with numerous illustrations. It therefore focuses on care following the incident – which is particularly important when professional help is not immediately available.
