Priorities vary as much as there are sailors, and there are hardly any official regulations, unless the vessel is registered for commercial sailing. In that case, there are clear rules: international commercial vessels undergo an annual inspection, during which the equipment, the maintenance carried out and the crew’s competence are checked.
Professional skipper Leon Schulz sails his MCA Cat 1-certified Hallberg-Rassy 46, the Regina Laska, and is well aware of the safety regulations he must follow: “The Sport or Pleasure Vessel Code”, “The Safety of Small Vessels in Commercial Use for Sports and Pleasure – A Code of Practice”.
The question now, however, is: should every private sailor follow these rules as well? But what makes sense for a private sailor who is simply sailing with their own family in the Baltic Sea or the Mediterranean? What about charter boats when it comes to safety equipment? As is so often the case when no paying guests are on board, it is up to private owners themselves to decide to what extent they equip and maintain their vessel and, last but not least, ensure that they and their crew receive adequate training.
In this webinar, Leon Schulz shares his personal experiences from having sailed nearly 100,000 nautical miles, provides an overview of noteworthy safety philosophies, and explains how he has equipped his own boat and what training he regularly undertakes or also offers himself to ensure he is always as safe as possible whilst at sea.
