The transition between France and Italy offers wonderful contrasts, for however close the two islands may be to one another, they each possess their own distinct, characteristic charm. On the Italian side, there is a sea of sparkling turquoise anchorages nestled amongst rugged cliffs and numerous small islets. A true anchorage paradise, centred around the charming village of Maddalena on the island of the same name. Unspoilt nature, superb Italian cuisine and Italian zest for life, complemented by imposing mega-yachts along the Costa Smeralda and truly idyllic beaches.
In contrast, there is the picturesque, unique island of Corsica, with its steep mountain ranges rising to over 2,700 metres and its charming little towns perched high on cliffs or mountains, such as Bonifacio, Porto Vecchio and Calvi. Here, too, there is a vast selection of bays and, in the south, some incomparable islands. Corsica is famous for its spectacular mountainous landscape, particularly on the west coast. Add to that the French way of life, with its distinctive regional cuisine, top-class patisseries and that certain something of the unique, proud Corsican way of life.
One thing this area has in common is the Mistral: it can blow with great force even in summer and become stormy in the narrows of the Strait of Bonifacio between the islands. Add to that a sea peppered with plenty of shallows and rocks. This makes the sailing area quite challenging at times. What do skippers and crews need to bear in mind in terms of seamanship? And the sheer number of bays sometimes makes choosing a destination a real dilemma: where to go, what to skip, which towns to visit? The right weather strategy and choice of route are crucial in this sailing area.
This is precisely what YACHT writer and former travel editor Andreas Fritsch – who has been travelling throughout all the Mediterranean sailing regions for the past 28 years, producing over 100 reports for YACHT – aims to convey.
