A successful, fun and enjoyable sailing trip is almost always preceded by good, structured planning. Even someone who simply wants to move their boat within the harbour will have taken the wind, the current, the traffic and the mooring lines into account, and will have briefed the crew before even beginning the manoeuvre. After all, as many know from experience, simply casting off and letting the lines go is often the cause of shouting, a disgruntled crew, navigational errors, damage and even accidents.
English-speaking sailors call it the 6-P rule: “Proper Preparation Prevents Pathetic Poor Performance”. As such, the Royal Yachting Association devotes a great deal of attention to the topic of ‘Passage Planning’ on the path to becoming an RYA Yachtmaster; this is a fundamental component of, and also the final examination for, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore theory course.
Of course, the passage plan depends on the trip itself. Is the area familiar, or is it, for example, a multi-day crossing of the Bay of Biscay? In fact, a surprising number of accidents happen right on our doorstep, in our home waters, precisely because that’s where we’re least prepared!
In this webinar, RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor and Examiner Leon Schulz explains how the RYA teaches the four-step passage planning method derived from the IMO (International Maritime Organisation): Appraisal, Planning, Execution and Monitoring (APEM). Professional skipper Leon Schulz uses his own Reginasailing logbook as an example, which is structured around these four steps and includes specially tailored checklists.
Anyone who understands what lies behind these four APEM steps and knows how to apply them will not only be better prepared for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, but will also be able to offer their friends and family stress-free, enjoyable days out sailing, which, thanks to good preparation and planning, will run smoothly and confidently.
