With the Essential Helmets series, Typhoon is launching a water sports helmet for fast dinghies and foilers. The helmet is aimed at sailors of beach cats, skiffs, moths and other fast boat classes. A flexible plastic flap also protects the ears in the event of capsizing at high speeds.

The need for head protection grows with increasing speed on the water. Modern foilers reach speeds of over 30 knots, with high-performance skiffs and beachcats not far behind. When capsizing at this speed, hitting the surface of the water or colliding with the rig can pose a risk of injury. Typhoon addresses this risk with an affordable helmet series aimed specifically at sailors in performance-orientated boat classes. Unlike helmets used in canoe slalom or wakeboarding, the Essential Helmet is tailored to the specific requirements of sailing, according to the manufacturer.

Ear protection with flexible flaps

The helmet has flexible plastic flaps that extend over the ears. These are designed to provide additional protection in the event of a side impact with the water without restricting hearing. Lateral impact is a frequent risk of injury, particularly in the event of capsizing at high speed. The flaps are designed to be flexible so as not to interfere with normal movements.

The helmet shell is made of robust plastic. Typhoon does not provide details on the exact material composition or the standards used. The inner lining should dry quickly and remain comfortable even when worn for long periods. The ventilation is optimised for use on the water - too many openings would reduce protection in the event of capsizing.

Sizes and colours

The Essential Helmets series is available in several sizes to suit different head shapes. An exact size chart is not yet available. However, sizes for children and teenagers will be available. The helmets are available in different colours, which can increase visibility on the water. An adjustable strap system should ensure a secure fit even during fast manoeuvres and rough seas.

The price of 60 euros makes the helmet a comparatively favourable option for beginners in fast boat classes. Typhoon distributes the Essential Helmets via Bukh Bremen and other specialised dealers. The helmets should be available shortly.
