Deck Lock Lifeline:

Skylotec launches safety products for sailors. The German company, known for harnesses in the industrial climbing sector, is expanding its range to include maritime applications. The Deck Lock Lifeline is an elasticated safety line with three palm-squeeze carabiners. The Access Set Light combines a climbing harness with a safety line for staying in the rig.

Skylotec has been an established manufacturer of fall protection systems and climbing harnesses for professional applications for many years - for example in scaffolding, wind turbines and height rescue. With the two new products, the company is transferring its expertise to sailing. While the Deck Lock is designed for securing on deck, the Access Set Light is for working safely in the rig. Both systems are based on proven industrial technology that has been adapted to maritime requirements.

Deck Lock: Elasticated safety line with squeeze carabiners

The Deck Lock is equipped with three palm squeeze carabiners. These can be opened with one hand by squeezing the catch with the palm of the hand. The carabiners are made of anodised aluminium and are corrosion-resistant. Three carabiners have the advantage that two hooks always remain connected to the person and boat, while the third is used for repositioning. The polyester webbing is elasticated and yields under load. This reduces the jolt in the event of a fall. An integrated overload indicator signals when the line has been subjected to extreme strain and should be replaced. Reflective elements on the webbing increase visibility in the dark. At 640 grams, the Deck Lock is quite light. The price is 109 euros.

Access Set Light: Climbing harness for belaying

The Access Set Light combines a sit harness with a special safety line for working in the rig. The harness is based on Skylotec's climbing harness technology and has padded leg loops and a reinforced waist belt. Unlike maritime harnesses, the system is designed for vertical hanging - for example when working at the masthead or in the spreader.

The safety line supplied is shorter than the Deck Lock and is specially designed for use in the rig. It has a shock absorber that reduces the impact force in the event of a fall. Two carabiners enable double securing when repositioning at different attachment points in the rig. The harness has several material loops for tools or additional equipment.

The Access Set Light is aimed at sailors who regularly have to carry out maintenance work on the rig or repairs at sea. The design allows safe working even with both hands, as the harness supports the body weight. The fit is adjustable via buckles on the leg loops and waist and is designed to be suitable for both men and women.
