Mustang Survival presents the Atlas 190 Pro Sensor, an automatic lifejacket with 190 newtons of buoyancy. The design of the buoyancy chamber is intended to keep the airways above the waterline particularly effectively.
With 190 newtons of buoyancy, the Atlas Pro Sensor is positioned in the 150 newton buoyancy class. This means that it is not primarily designed for ocean cruising. However, the American manufacturer wants to achieve a safe swimming position even with this buoyancy thanks to the special design of the buoyancy chamber. Mustang Survival is a North American manufacturer of survival and safety equipment with many years of experience in the maritime sector. The Atlas series is aimed at cruising sailors. In Germany, the waistcoat is now distributed by B-Trident. As a result, the manufacturer was awarded a Special Mention for the Atlas 190 Pro at the 2023 Mets, but it is only now available on the German market.
The Atlas 190 Pro Sensor is equipped with a system called ADAPT by the manufacturer. The name stands for Advanced Airway Protection & Turning. The design of the buoyancy chamber is intended to turn people in the water particularly effectively into a safe supine position and protect the airways from water thanks to a high freeboard. Past lifejacket tests have shown that even models in the 275 Newton class are not always able to reliably turn an unconscious person. If the Atlas 190 can do this with significantly less buoyancy, this would be a real advantage.
In practice, less buoyancy means less material in the buoyancy chamber and therefore possibly greater comfort. This is where the Mustang model scores points both when packed and when the buoyancy chamber is inflated. The shell should leave the neck free and offer a high level of comfort. The buoyancy chamber in turn supports the head and neck and keeps the mouth and nose as far away from the water as possible.
An integrated spray hood protects the mouth and nose from waves washing over them. This is particularly important in rough seas when the person in the water is hit by wave crests. The spray hood is made of bright orange material with reflective stripes and a large viewing window.
A D-ring on the front is used to hook in a safety line. The crotch strap prevents the waistcoat from sliding upwards. Reflective elements on the shoulders and collar increase visibility in the dark. A signal whistle is attached to the waistcoat. A pocket for a MOB light or AIS-MOB device is provided.
The Atlas 190 Pro Sensor is designed for long-term wear. The wide collar distributes the weight of the CO2 cartridge evenly. Several adjustment straps on the shoulders and waist allow it to be adapted to different body sizes. The outer material is water-repellent and UV-resistant.
The weight is around 1,200 grams. The waistcoat is available in The Atlas 190 Pro Sensor is available in Germany from B-Trident. The price is 285 euros.
