Very few cruising sailors would want to do without the helpful technology for setting and recovering the jib and genoa. In fact, most furling systems work extremely reliably. Nevertheless, problems can occur if they are not properly maintained. This can be avoided with just a few simple steps. We show you how.
A half furled headsail flapping wildly in a storm that cannot be moved forwards or backwards - a nightmare for any sailor. In such situations, there is usually not much that can be saved. The cloth is quickly torn and has become hopelessly twisted around the forestay.
This does not have to happen. Sluggish or even jammed furling systems do not usually result from technical faults, but from a lack of maintenance. Often the bearings are simply jammed because they have never been cleaned or lubricated.
If you pay a minimum of attention to the technology, you can save yourself such trouble. In a new episode of YACHT-Werkstatt, we show you how to keep your winding engines in good shape with little effort.
In addition: installation made easy. Even laymen can rig the newly acquired furling system without any problems. You can read all about how it works, which tools and aids you need in the new issue of YACHT (issue 1/2008, available now in magazine shops).
In YACHT 25-26/2007 we tested furling systems from various manufacturers in detail. You can find the video of the test in the YACHT tv section.
