It is not always possible to retrofit electric winches. The Ewincher has the drive integrated into the crank handle

The Ewincher from France is designed to help sailors who have already considered retrofitting electric winches, but have not wanted to do so due to a lack of space for the drive and additional batteries on board or the high costs. The crank with electric drive does not need to be installed and, thanks to its lithium-ion battery and brushless motor, should not only have plenty of power but also last at least one day of sailing.

The Ewincher is designed to assist with setting the sails as support for the last few metres of the halyard or for trimming the sheets. The rotation speed can be regulated at the touch of a button. A second button is used to change the direction of rotation so that both gears of the two-speed wiper are available. It is also possible to crank normally and use the electric assistance at the same time.

The Ewinscher has the same lever arm and handle as a normal manual crank. The battery is replaceable and all components are waterproof to IPX6 standard. The manufacturer recommends the Ewincher for boats from 30 to 50 feet. The electric crank costs 2600 euros including battery, charger, bracket and bag. An additional battery costs 390 euros.

We have already had the opportunity to test the Ewincher. You can read how the electric crank performed in the test in theYACHT 14/2018, on newsstands from 27 June.
