Installation is extremely simple: the electrics are designed as a plug-and-play solution and the Saildrive fits the Volvo and Yanmar cut-outs. The engine has closed cooling and lubrication; there is no contact between parts inside the drive and the outside water. According to the manufacturer, the installation in a patented, flexible mounting system should not transmit any vibrations to the hull.
Each drive is put through its paces for six hours before delivery. "We don't ship anything that we're not convinced of ourselves," assures Christian Hallberg, Managing Director of Oceanvolt. "Quality is very important to us, which is why we were able to build the entire system from just 30 parts. This ensures great reliability," he continues.
Another highlight is that the batteries can be charged under sail despite the folding prop. To do this, the prop is unfolded at the push of a button and immediately begins to generate electricity via the motor, which then acts as a generator. Due to the folding prop, which is optimised for propulsion, the efficiency when charging is rather low, but electricity can still be generated.
The low weight allows the installation of large battery banks without becoming heavier than a conventional diesel. The drive is waterproof to IP-54.
It is sold directly by the manufacturer, including in Germany. A larger motor with 15.9 kilowatts of power is currently being developed. For the small motor with Saildrive, which is already available, 10,700 euros must be transferred to Finland. Transport to Germany must also be arranged, with delivery ex works.
