Tried and tested: Reduced to the essentialsPhoto: Hersteller
Anyone who sails races wants to be presented with the necessary information quickly and straightforwardly. Above all, speed and course

The Velocitek Speedpuck, which costs 279 euros, adds to these functions by storing the top speed and a scale that shows deviations from the course travelled in steps of three degrees. It runs permanently at the top of the display, while the other views can be changed at the touch of a button.

The 27 millimetre digits are very easy to read, even in daylight in summer, and the pressure point of the button is also absolutely "cold finger" compatible. The device, which is powered by three AA batteries, is attached with a special Velcro fastener that holds it securely in place. A charge of three 2.7 ampere-hour rechargeable batteries supplies the Speedpuck with power for several days of sailing; the battery indicator has four levels and warns in good time. The water resistance, specified as three metres submersion depth, should be sufficient as splash water protection on open boats. Nice: use as a data logger. Tracks can be easily transferred to a PC via a USB interface, and Velocitek offers its own software for analysing and archiving the data as a free download.

The speed puck is distributed via the Kohlhoff GmbH
