From wristwatches and smartphone apps to permanently installed race computers at the foot of the mast - the choice of starting aids is huge. With the Regatta Race Timer from Gill, another one has now been added. Whether its display is the largest currently available, as the manufacturer claims, remains to be seen. In any case, the display with digits up to 2.6 centimetres in size is easy to read.
The clock can handle the usual three-, five- or ten-minute countdowns, the lead time of which can be set in five-minute increments. In addition, the countdown can be synchronised with the start signals at the touch of a button or an individual countdown can be programmed. After the start, the display either switches to a double stopwatch, which can be used to set up to 50 split times, or the countdown is restarted. A time display and an alarm clock complete the range of functions. It is operated using four large, easy-to-grip buttons and can be used almost without having to look at the instructions.
At first glance, the wide bracelet with elasticated strap appears bulky, but its length means that the watch can be attached not only to the wrist, but also to the mast base or boom. The watch itself is held on the strap with a bayonet catch and can be rotated. Permanent mounting on the boat is also possible, as the bayonet base can be screwed directly onto the deck without the need to purchase additional brackets.
The Regatta Race Timer is said to be waterproof to a depth of 50 metres and is available in yellow, red and black. Price: around 95 euros.
