With the Fenix, Garmin recently presented a new GPS watch with navigation functions and a graphic display. Now comes the Quatix, which is specially designed for sailing but is much more than a simple GPS. It has a tilt-compensated 3-axis compass with automatic calibration and is waterproof. The Quatix is also equipped with a Bluetooth and ANT-plus radio module and works as a wireless remote control for all Garmin autopilots.

It can also be linked to the on-board NMEA 2000 instrument system via the optional GNT-10 radio module. This not only allows information such as course, speed or water depth to be read on the wrist, but also allows tide and current reports to be checked and the audio system to be controlled. The watch's MOB function provides additional safety: the marked position is automatically transferred to a compatible plotter via the network.

Sailing functions

But the Quatix is also useful without external sensors. For example, you can project a virtual start line between two waypoints on the watch. Thanks to the combined countdown timer, the timing for the zero start can be perfected. During the race, the integrated tacking assistant provides information about course changes due to wind shifts and the tactical need to tack.

The Quatix is made from an extremely robust, steel-reinforced plastic case, the display is protected by a scratch-resistant mineral glass and the interchangeable strap is securely fastened with four screws. The watch is powered by an integrated lithium-ion battery, which should last 16 hours in GPS mode.

The Quatix is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2013 and will cost around 450 euros.
