Garmin is launching two marine radios, the new JL Audio A60 and A60-H, designed for boats with up to four separate audio zones. Integrated DSP, DAB reception and integration into an NMEA-2000 network are designed to enhance sound quality and ease of use on modern cruising yachts. Of particular interest to those retrofitting: the A60-H can be concealed from view behind a compatible Garmin chartplotter.

The JL Audio A60 and A60-H represent a new generation of devices in Garmin’s marine audio range. The focus is not merely on higher volume or a more stylish display, but on a more seamlessly integrated system: the music source, speakers, remote controls and multifunction display are designed to be operated as a single system.

Two designs for the cockpit

The A60 is the visible radio designed for installation at the helm. Garmin specifies a 2.95-inch colour display with a resolution of 640 × 360 pixels that is readable in sunlight. This model is therefore aimed at boat owners who wish to control the source, volume and zones directly on the unit itself.

The A60-H takes the opposite approach. It is designed as a ‘Hideaway’ variant for concealed installation and is intended to work in conjunction with a Garmin multifunction display. This can be advantageous during a refit if no further cut-out is required at the helm or if existing control panels are to remain as undisturbed as possible. Whether the concept works on a specific boat, however, depends on the space available behind the panel, the plotter used and the existing cabling.

According to the manufacturer’s specifications, both versions are designed to withstand the rigours of a maritime environment in accordance with IPX6 and IPX7. This refers to protection against powerful water jets and temporary submersion; it is no substitute for professional installation or proper sealing of the installation site.

Four zones and DSP: What do they offer on board?

The A60 system can control four audio zones independently. This is particularly useful, for example, when you want music playing in the cockpit whilst a different volume level is required in the saloon, or when the speakers in the bow are to remain completely silent. The key factor here is the overall system: the number and power of the amplifiers, the speakers, the cabling and the available power supply must all be suited to the desired setup.

The integrated DSP – that is, digital signal processing – is designed to optimise the audio signal for the connected speakers and subwoofers and to limit the load on them. This is particularly relevant on open boats: wind, the sound of the boat moving and the distance between the listening position and the speakers make it considerably more difficult to achieve a balanced sound than in a cabin.

For setup, Garmin refers users to the updated Garmin Audio app. The DSP configuration in the Garmin Audio app It explicitly supports the A60 models. Whilst it can simplify the calibration process, it does not relieve the installer of the groundwork: the speaker positions, polarity, cable cross-section and fuse protection must all be correct before any digital fine-tuning can take place.

Bluetooth LE, DAB and automatic volume control

The A60 supports Bluetooth LE audio streaming. Garmin claims this delivers better transmission quality from compatible mobile devices. It also features a built-in DAB tuner. For sailors who wish to listen to terrestrial radio whilst sailing along the coast, this sets it apart from many basic Bluetooth radios. However, reception quality remains dependent on the sailing area, the antenna and the distance from the transmitter.

The radio can be connected to compatible Garmin displays via the NMEA-2000 network. It also supports speed-dependent volume control. This means the system can increase the volume as speed increases to compensate for engine, wind and water noise. Those who mainly sail should check how well this automatic function works with their own noise profile.

The NMEA-2000 connection primarily enhances ease of use, not sound quality. However, it is part of a trend that is also evident in other modern on-board systems: Language warnings in the NMEA-2000 network and the audio control system use the same infrastructure, but perform clearly distinct functions. Alarm messages must always take precedence over entertainment.

New controls for the system

Garmin supplies the radios with two control units. The R5 volume control combines volume and play/pause functions in a single rotary knob and, according to the manufacturer, requires a 1.5-inch mounting hole. The NRX-300 wired remote control features an integrated LCD display and buttons for controlling up to four zones.

Both accessories are integrated via NMEA 2000 and are rated to IPX7. This allows the control units to be positioned closer to where people actually listen – for example, in the cockpit or at the chart table. Whether this offers any added value compared to the app and chartplotter depends on everyday life on board: on a small yacht, an additional remote control may be superfluous; on larger boats with separate living areas, it makes more sense.

What to check when replacing an existing radio

Anyone looking to replace an older radio should not just compare the desired range of features before making a purchase. It is also important to consider the installation dimensions, connectors, antenna, electrical circuit, fuse and whether the amplifier and speakers can be reused. Garmin offers a separate A60 retrofit kit . This may make the conversion easier, but it is not a universal adapter suitable for every existing system.

The new A60 approach is particularly effective where a networked vehicle electrical system, multiple listening zones and a permanent audio installation come together. An independent practical test is still required to assess sound quality, operation in rough seas and actual integration with Garmin displays. Compared with the models already presented Fusion Apollo speakers and subwoofers Garmin is therefore focusing primarily on the control unit and its connectivity in the A60 models.
