Simrad GoFree now connects NSS series plotters with iPad and iPhone, and will probably also connect with Android devices in the future
A free app and the Wifi 1 network coupler enable tablets and smartphones to access multifunctional displays from the NSS series

The long-awaited wireless network solution for monitoring and controlling Simrad navigation electronics using mobile communication devices is now available. The system, called GoFree Wireless, allows wireless data exchange between all Simrad NSS multifunction displays as well as tablet computers and smartphones. It consists of the free software "GoFree Viewer and Control App" and the hardware "Simrad Wifi-1 network coupler".

The app, developed for the iPad, can be used to control all NSS functions. It duplicates the NSS display on the tablet and controls zoom, pan, radar, StructureScan, sonar and operation of the SonicHub entertainment system. The hardware is multi-user capable, allowing multiple devices to communicate with the NSS displays simultaneously. The connection to Wifi-1 can be password protected via the Simrad NSS menu to control access to the network.

Unlike many of its competitors, Simrad GoFree is an open platform (Open Data Protocol). This means that third-party providers can also develop applications for the system, for example to enable Android devices to access the navigation system.

The Wifi-1 network coupler is immediately ready for operation thanks to plug-and-play. It communicates with the multifunctional displays via Ethernet and with mobile devices via WLAN. The coupler measures 52 x 172 mm and requires only 200 milliamperes from the 12-volt mains.

Simrad Wifi-1 costs 237 euros. The GoFree Viewer and Control App can be downloaded from the Apple Store. Further information can be found at www.simrad-yachting.de.
