With the Orion XS 1400, Victron is presenting the first voltage converter that is flexible in terms of both input voltage and output voltage and can be used in both 12-volt and 24-volt systems. In the 24V/24V configuration, the device delivers twice the charging power of the original Orion XS 50 B2B charger at 1400 watts.
The Orion XS 1400 can be used both as a battery-to-battery charger (B2B charger) and as a power supply. The automatic buck-boost control makes it possible to set the output voltage between 10 and 32 volts, whereby the input voltage may be between 9 and 35 volts. In power supply mode, the output voltage remains stable regardless of load or input fluctuations.
As a battery charger, the Orion XS 1400 uses a four-stage charging algorithm with eight predefined characteristic curves for lead-acid, AGM and lithium batteries. Individual voltage settings can also be made. The device recognises engine shutdowns without an additional sensor and stops the charging process. In lithium mode, the ambient temperature is monitored and the charging process is stopped at temperatures below zero degrees so as not to damage the battery. In addition, several devices can be connected in parallel to increase the charging capacity.
With its IP65 protection rating, the Orion XS 1400 is protected against moisture. The fanless design not only prevents noise, but also eliminates a potential wear point. Thanks to its high efficiency of 98.5 per cent, the Orion XS 1400 is designed to deliver its full performance up to an ambient temperature of 40 degrees. If the temperature continues to rise, the B2B charger automatically reduces the charging process. The Orion XS 1400 can be conveniently configured and monitored via Bluetooth using the VictronConnect app. It can also communicate with other Victron products.
The price is said to be around 450 euros, but some online retailers are offering the device at significantly lower prices.
