With some you can make phone calls, with others you can only send messages. What they all have in common is that they keep you connected to the country

The average Baltic sailor often makes do with a smartphone and radio. However, in more remote areas, far from the coast and the mobile phone network, this is no help: this is where satellite communication devices are needed. They are available in many different designs and price ranges. Some can be used to make phone calls, while others can only be used to send messages, make an emergency call and transmit the GPS position. Please note: Satellite fees are added to the purchase price of the device. These five devices are suitable for use on board:

Garmin inReach Mini

Strictly speaking, the Garmin inReach Mini is not a satellite phone, but a satellite communicator: although it does not allow calls, it does allow text messages, weather updates and the triggering of the interactive SOS search and rescue centre, using the Iridium network. The GPSMAP 86i combines GPS navigation with Garmin inReach technology. Messages can be received and sent via the Iridum network and the location can be shared.
