Duffel bags for sailors have to withstand more than normal sports bags. Salt water, spray, rain and permanent moisture are tough on the material and seams. The Musto 65L Waterproof Carryall is designed for precisely these conditions. With a volume of 65 litres, it offers sufficient space for oilskins, spare clothing, towels and personal equipment. The design focuses on functionality: robust material, welded seams, roll-top fastening.
The material of the Carryall is 100 per cent polyester. The seams are crucial for waterproofness. Seams are sewn on normal bags - the needle holes remain as potential weak points. With the Musto Carryall, the seams are welded. The layers of material are joined together under heat without needles leaving holes. The result: completely waterproof connections.
The roll-top fastener reinforces the protection. The opening is rolled up several times and secured with a compression strap. This system is more reliable than zips as there are no moving parts that can corrode or break. Even if the bag is completely submerged under water or falls overboard, the contents remain dry. The additional seal closure - a kind of sealing lip - provides extra security.
There is a zip pocket with a waterproof zip on the outside. Small items that need to be quickly accessible can be stowed here: Mobile phone, keys, wallet. The zip is of the "toothless zip" type - without the classic teeth that can get caught. This makes it easier to use, even with wet or cold fingers.
65 litre volume means: The bag can get heavy. A fully packed duffel bag with wet oilskins, boots and a change of clothes can quickly weigh 15 to 20 kilograms. Musto therefore equips the Carryall with adjustable, padded shoulder straps. The airmesh fabric on the back of the straps is breathable and prevents the wearer from sweating too much under the straps.
The bag can be worn either over the shoulder or as a rucksack. For short distances - from the car to the jetty - there are additional webbing carrying handles on the sides. These are made from robust webbing and hold even when the bag is fully loaded.
The external daisy chain is a series of loops on the outside of the bag. Additional items can be attached to these: a water bottle holder, carabiner with key ring, a wet wetsuit for drying. The daisy chain is a classic feature from the outdoor sector and significantly increases the flexibility of the bag.
The buckles, fasteners and adjusters on the Carryall are made by Duraflex - a manufacturer that specialises in high-quality plastic fittings. These fittings are salt water resistant, UV-stable and last even under frequent use. Duraflex fittings are designed for maritime use.
The compression strap on the roll top also works with Duraflex buckles. It is not only used to close the bag, but also to compress the contents. When the bag is not fully packed, the strap can be tightened to prevent the contents from shifting. This increases stability when carrying and prevents the bag from bulking up impractically.
Musto advertises the Carryall for use on sailing boats, motorboats and during training. However, the bag works wherever equipment needs to be transported safely and dry. When sailing, it serves as the main piece of luggage for weekend cruises or longer trips. On motorboats, it offers storage space for a change of clothes, sun cream and provisions. Sailing coaches use them to transport equipment for several participants.
The Carryall is also practical off the water: for kayaking, stand-up paddling, camping or outdoor activities in bad weather. The waterproof construction protects your equipment even in pouring rain or muddy conditions.
The Musto 65L Waterproof Carryall costs 159 euros.
