The Spanish company Radarcan offers the mosquito repellent Plus R-100, a wristband that uses acoustic signals to keep mosquitoes away from the wearer. The mosquitoes that cause unpleasant bites are females with fertilised eggs. The R-100, which resembles a wristwatch, emits a sound that is modelled on the flapping of the male mosquito's wings and is intended to drive the female away. According to the manufacturer, it can only be heard very quietly, even when held to the ear, and is therefore not disturbing.
As no chemicals are used, the bracelet can also be used on children. It offers two levels of protection and an LED indicates the operating status. The battery is designed to last for up to ten months with four hours of use per day.
The Mosquito Repellent Plus R-100 is available in grey, red, blue and black. The device, which measures 30 x 14 millimetres, can also be detached from the wristband and attached to clothing or near the sleeping area using a clip. It is said to be effective against mosquitoes, Asian tiger mosquitoes, malaria, chinkungunya, dengue and Zika vector mosquitoes and costs 19 euros.
